Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes. Prenatal acupuncture has been used for thousands of years and can support a healthy pregnancy and uncomplicated delivery. An Australian study conducted in 2002 by Adelaide University found that acupuncture during pregnancy had no adverse effects and was completely safe when done by a trained acupuncturist. You may have heard that some acupuncture points are forbidden in pregnancy. This is true – certain points are to be avoided during pregnancy as they may stimulate uterine contractions. However, a practitioner trained in prenatal acupuncture will know which points can safely be used and which should be avoided.

Acupuncture, in pregnancy and outside of pregnancy, IS safe when it is performed by a qualified, educated and responsible practitioner. Acupuncturists that have studied Traditional Chinese Medicine have the benefit of thousands of years of experience behind them. Since acupuncture is also performed by Naturopaths, Physiotherapists, MD’s, Chiropractors and Massage therapists etc., if you are seeing a health care practitioner that does not feel comfortable treating pregnant women, it is likely because that person has not specialized in this area. Gynecology and Obstetrics is an area of specialization in Chinese Medicine, just as it is in the West. If you are interested in acupuncture during pregnancy, find a practitioner that has related education and experience.
